Making a Simple Resume

A resume is a one-page paper that tells an employer about you. It lists your contact info, skills, and any work or volunteer experience. It doesn't have to be fancy.

In this lesson

  • Know what goes on a resume.
  • Build a simple one-page resume.

What goes on a resume

  • Top. Your name, phone, and email.

  • Skills. A few things you're good at, like 'organized,' 'reliable,' 'careful with details.'

  • Experience. Jobs, volunteer work, or school projects, with what you did.

  • Education. Schools you attended.

If you don't have job experience yet

That's okay — everyone starts somewhere. You can list volunteer work, school activities, chores you do well, or classes you've taken. Focus on your strengths.

Make it easy to read

  • Use a plain font and clear headings.
  • Use short bullet points, not long paragraphs.
  • Check spelling, or ask someone to check it.
  • Save it as a PDF so it looks the same everywhere.

Quick check

Try these to see what you remember. There are no grades — pick an answer to see how you did.
