Choosing and Asking References

A reference is a person who can tell an employer that you're a good worker. Applications often ask for two or three. Choosing the right people — and asking them politely — matters.

Who makes a good reference

  • Good choices. A teacher, coach, job coach, volunteer leader, or past boss.

  • Usually not. Close family members (employers want people outside your family).

How to ask

Always ask before you list someone. It's polite, and it lets them get ready for a call.

  • Ask clearly. 'Would you be a reference for me when I apply for jobs?'

  • Give details. Tell them what kind of job you're seeking.

  • Get their info. Ask for the phone number or email they want employers to use.

  • Say thanks. Thank them for helping you.
