Why Taking Care of Yourself Matters

Self-care means taking care of your own body. It is not about being perfect. It is about a few simple habits you do most days. These habits keep you healthy and help you feel good about yourself.

In this lesson

  • Say what self-care means in your own words.
  • Name two reasons self-care matters to you.

What is self-care?

Self-care is the things you do to take care of your body. It includes brushing your teeth, showering, wearing clean clothes, and washing your hands.

You do not have to do everything at once. You can learn one step at a time. That is what this course is for.

Why it matters

  • Your health. Clean teeth, skin, and hands help you stay well and get sick less often.

  • How you feel. Feeling clean and fresh can help you feel calm, confident, and ready for your day.

  • Your goals. Self-care helps with school, work, friends, and living on your own. People notice when you take care of yourself.

It can be hard sometimes — that's okay

Some days self-care feels easy. Other days it feels like a lot. Maybe a smell, a sound, or the water bothers you. Maybe you are tired.

That is normal. Later in this course you will learn ways to make self-care easier on hard days.

Quick check

Try these to see what you remember. There are no grades — pick an answer to see how you did.
