Lesson 4 of 6 · Connecting with Others5 min

Making and Keeping Friends

Friends make life better. Making friends can feel hard, but it is a skill you can learn. It starts with small steps and shared interests.

In this lesson

  • Know simple ways to meet people.
  • Know how to grow and keep a friendship.

Where to meet people

  • Shared interests. Clubs, classes, games, or groups about things you like.

  • Work or school. People you see often are easier to get to know.

  • Programs. Community or disability programs that bring people together.

Starting a friendship

  • Say hi and use the person's name.
  • Ask a question about them, like what they like to do.
  • Find something you both enjoy.
  • Suggest doing that thing together.

Keeping a friendship

Friendships grow when you stay in touch and treat each other well. Text or call sometimes. Show up when you say you will. Listen and care about their life, too.

Quick check

Try these to see what you remember. There are no grades — pick an answer to see how you did.
